KATHMANDU, Dec 8 : Ncell has begun issuing mobile numbers under the new 971 range, following government approval to expand its number series, Ncell said in a press release.
The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) granted Ncell permission on May 28, 2025 to distribute numbers beginning with 971, according to the company. The telecom operator sought an additional range after existing series—980, 981, 982, and 970—were nearly exhausted.

“We are thankful to the NTA for granting approval for this new number range, keeping the market situation in mind. After completing the necessary preparations, we started issuing new numbers under this range,” the press release quoted Upanga Dutta, Chief Consumer Business Officer at Ncell as saying. He added that mobile numbers now underpin a wide range of services, from communication to digital transactions, making the new series beneficial for both customers and service providers.
With the rollout of the 971 numbers, Ncell has requested all government and non-government institutions, service providers, banks, and financial institutions to integrate or update this new range in their systems if they have not already done so. Updating the number range is necessary to ensure seamless service delivery across platforms linked to mobile systems.
According to Ncell, mobile numbers are increasingly essential for receiving OTPs, signing up for mobile and web-based applications, and conducting various digital transactions. As Nepal continues to advance technologically, mobile numbers remain a key gateway for citizens to access digital services efficiently.
